Microwave oven is one of the most recent additions to the 'must have' category of home appliances. It is essentially a heater that works on the principle of radiation. The small magnetron, present inside the oven is the original source of radiation which is capable of penetrating solids; providing a heating action thereby heating or cooking the food placed inside.

Food Inside:
The food placed inside the oven gets heated or cooked based on the specific setting. As it radiations buzz to life, the turntable on which the bowl of food is placed starts to turn. This provides a uniform heating effect. By the end of the preset time there is an audible sound which alerts the user that the task of heating or cooking is done.

Different Types:
There are essentially two types based on the operating logic.
a) Mechanical switch based appliance.
b) Digital logic based device.

The mechanical ones have 2 knobs. The timer knob can be turned to set the time. On completion of the same, it unwinds to its "0" position mark. The knob is pre-calibrated such that the time to unwind the spring equals the time marked on the dial. Likewise, the temperature is also set using a temperature setting knob with heat sections, selectable in watts.

The digital microwave oven is more advanced and all operations are controlled by touch switches. It is equipped with digital displays that reflect the settings. There is yet another classification based on the material that makes up the microwave oven. Plastic and metal body microwave ovens and consumers may choose the one that is most suitable for them.

Three things to keep away from the Microwave Oven:

  • Avoid using metallic piece inside the oven as the radiations cause them to sparkle which may harm the appliance.
  • Avoid filling the containers to the brim and switch to moderate setting, as too high or too low can be harmful to the oven.
  • Avoid using solvents and acids to clean the microwave and keep electronic gadgets away from the appliance as the radiation will tarnish the silicon chips.

Why switch to microwave mode of cooking:

They are faster and less messy Apt for heating beverages and pre-cooked food Consumes lesser energy and is a means of conserving LPG
